International Woman's Day 2019

Happy International Woman's Day 2019! We thought we would use this day to reflect on women who have inspired each of us and also talk a bit about who we are and how we have got to where we are today.

Which women have most inspired you and why?
In real life? My mum (of course). She is strong, clever, funny and feisty and she taught me there is NOTHING I cannot do when I put my mind to it and work hard enough. She's also always encouraged me to follow my own path and live a life less ordinary.

In fiction? Little Orphan Annie. Haha! She was one feisty chick, who loved her dog and protected her friends. What's not to like? :)

How did you get to where you are today?
A bit of luck and a lot of hard work. But mainly by being surrounded and supported by good people; my friends, my family...and my clients! But of course I have to give a special shout out to my husband Dave. I think it's really important, especially on International Women's Day, to give the good guys their due. The guys who aren't afraid of strong women but who support and respect us and who proudly stand with us in the fight for equality. Dave is all that and more and I wouldn't be where I am today without him.

What accomplishment/s are you most proud of?
That's an easy one...the day I was offered a place at the Glasgow School of Art. It was a real pinch-me moment. Like winning the lottery. Having been told by so many people not to get my hopes up, that very few people are accepted on their first application (if at all), and that I should look into alternative options in case I didn't get in...I'd definitely started to doubt myself. So to be accepted was a real endorsement of my creative ability and reinforced that self-belief that my mother had taught me.

So that...and the day I started Greenhouse Studios, of course!

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks...most of them are just as worried as you. Stand tall, speak up and stick to your guns!

Which women have most inspired you and why?
I have been extremely lucky to grow up with a lot of strong, independent and resilient women in my immediate family. From them I have learnt that strength and confidence does not have to be at the expense of kindness, fairness or your femininity. That dignity, integrity and honesty is the cornerstone of being a strong and resilient woman.

Professionally I've had the privileged to be mentored by a formidable female role model and creative director. She had to navigate a very male dominated advertising environment and climate in the early 80's and 90's but with perseverance, conviction and strength built an impressive creative career that has seen her working as a creative leader in both London and New York and later owning her own successful advertising agency where I had the privilege of working as creative director myself. She took me under her wing and from her I have learnt a great deal both professionally, personally and creatively.

How did you get to where you are today?
With consistent and dedicated hard work and a strong, unshakeable belief in myself. Not wavering from my core beliefs and values no matter the situation or circumstances. Knowing that everything is possible with a good dose determination and ambition. That my feminine intuition is my greatest asset. That I should embrace and celebrate it rather suppress or make excuses for it.

What accomplishment/s are you most proud of?
Raising a confident, kind but resilient and emotionally intelligent daughter.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Do not be so hard on yourself. Being you is enough. Nothing more, nothing less.

Which women have most inspired you and why?

My mum is my biggest inspiration - she is strong, kind, caring and just all round awesome! And since becoming a mum myself, I can appreciate her in a totally new way also. The two little ladies in my life - my two daughters - have also inspired me by making me see the world through their eyes which has changed my perception of things. They inspire me to laugh more, appreciate more and work out what my priorities are.

How did you get to where you are today?

Surrounding myself with awesome family and friends.

What accomplishment/s are you most proud of?

It might sound cliche but there is no bigger accomplishment for me than my daughters.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don't sweat the small stuff and believe in yourself more.
